New York City

To See And Be Seen

New Yorkers are creatures like no other. They love to see and be seen and to thrive in the rush and the confusion— it’s as if they were in a constant state of flow.

As EB White once noted in his famed Here is New York

“Mass hysteria is a terrible force, yet New Yorkers seem always to escape it by some tiny margin: they sit in stalled subways without claustrophobia, they extricate themselves from panic situations by some lucky wisecrack, they meet confusion and congestion with patience and grit—a sort of perpetual muddling through. Every facility is inadequate—the hospitals and schools and playgrounds are overcrowded, the express highways are feverish, the unimproved highways and bridges are bottlenecks; there is not enough air and not enough light, and there is usually either too much heat or too little. But the city makes up for its hazards and deficiencies by supplying its citizens with massive doses of a supplementary vitamin—the sense of belonging to something unique, cosmopolitan, mighty and unparalleled.”

A Realization

For New Yorkers, this has always seemed like an ok trade off. And because no one is ever home, who cares if one’s apartment is livable?

However studies by the World Health Organization have revealed that our built environment deeply affects our daily behaviors and lifestyles; together determining up to 80–90 percent of our health outcomes. The shutdown of 2020 has higlighted the importance of our built environment, and making our home livable. The remnant ramifications of the pandemic on how New Yorkers live and work, will continue to impact how they think of their living ennvironment for years to come.
